The Great White Pelican
The great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) is found from southeastern Europe through Asia and Africa. It is a huge bird, reaching up to 180 cm in length, 3,6 m wingspan and 15 Kg weight. It is a highly sociable bird and often forms large flocks as we can see in this photo taken in southern Mozambique. In flight, it is an elegant soaring bird, with the head held close to and aligned with the body. Its flight consists of a few slow wingbeats followed by a glide. Once aloft, the long-winged pelicans are powerful fliers, and often travel in spectacular linear, circular, or V-formation groups.
O pelicano branco ou pelicano comum (Pelecanus onocrotalus) é comumente encontrado do sudeste da Europa, Ásia e África. É uma ave de porte grande, com até 180 cm de comprimento, 3,6 m de envergadura de asas e 15 Kg de peso. É um pássaro altamente sociável e muitas vezes forma grandes bandos como podemos ver na foto acima tirada no sul de Moçambique. Em vôo, é um pássaro muito elegante, mantendo a cabeça perto e alinhada com o corpo. Seu vôo consiste em algumas batidas de asas seguidas de um planeio. Uma vez no ar, os pelicanos costumam viajar em grupos em formações lineares, circulares ou até em "V".
