Spotted Hyaena
The spotted hyena or laughing hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is native to Sub-Saharan Africa. It's believed that the species may have originated in Asia, and also was found throughout Europe for at least one million years until the end of the Late Pleistocene. They live in a matriarchal society and have very complex social behaviour and it's the most social species of the Carnivora group. Their social system is largely competitive rather than cooperative. Females provide only for their own offspring and do not share resources with others. Still, they are very successful animals due to their hunter-scavanger strategy and are the most common carnivore in Africa. These two cubs were photographed resting by one of the roads inside Kruger National Park, South Africa.
A hiena-malhada (Crocuta crocuta) é nativa da África Subsaariana. Acredita-se que a espécie possa ter se originado na Ásia e também era encontrada por toda a Europa por pelo menos um milhão de anos até o final do Pleistoceno. Elas vivem em uma sociedade matriarcal e têm um comportamento social muito complexo, sendo a espécie mais social do grupo Carnivora. Seu sistema social é amplamente competitivo e não cooperativo. As fêmeas fornecem alimento e proteção apenas aos seus próprios filhos e não compartilham recursos com os outros. Ainda assim, elas são animais de muito sucesso devido à sua estratégia de caçador-carniceiro e são os carnívoros mais comuns na África. Estes dois filhotes foram fotografados descansando em uma das estradas dentro do Parque Nacional Kruger, na África do Sul.
