Machu Picchu

The old city of Machu Picchu, Peru, is probably the most know archeological sites in South America. Most archaeologists believe that the city was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472), and today is the most familiar icon of this civilization. The Incas built the Machu Picchu around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish conquest. The city was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911. After that, most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give visitors a better idea of how they originally appeared. Today, most of the buildings are up, but with no roof. Still, if you visit the city you will be amazed by the technology that the Incas had at that time.
