Grazing on a River Bed
The African bush elephant (Loxodonta) is the largest terrestrial animal and live in family units comprising several adult cows, their daughters and their subadult sons. Each family unit is led by an older cow known as the matriarch. In average, they eat up to 450 kg of vegetation per day, and spend most of their time grazing. Their digestive system is not very efficient and only 40% of the ingested food is properly digested. This large family of the photo was spotted grazing in a dry river bed inside the Kruger National Park, South Africa.
O Elefante Africano (Loxodonta) é o maior animal terrestre encontrado, e vive em unidades familiares que incluem várias fêmeas adultas, suas filhas e seus filhos juvenis. Cada unidade familiar é liderada por uma fêmea mais velha, conhecida como matriarca. Em média, eles comem até 450 kg de vegetação por dia e passam a maior parte do seu tempo pastando. Seu sistema digestivo não é muito eficiente e apenas 40% do alimento ingerido é adequadamente digerido. Esta grande família da foto foi encontrada pastando em um leito seco de rio dentro do Parque Nacional de Kruger, na África do Sul.
