Forests and climate change

To better understand how forests respond to climate change, you have to go out of the office and do measurements. In this photo, I was measuring leaf-atmosphere gas exchange in trees in the famous Ruhande Arboretum in Rwanda (the oldest arboretum in Africa). This was my routine for 45 days, and it luckily ended with a published article! For the taller trees I had to improvise and build a bamboo platform for doing the measurements. This photo illustrates one of the reasons I choose to be a scientist!
Para entender melhor como as florestas respondem às mudanças climáticas, você precisa fazer medições. Nesta foto, eu estava medindo a troca gasosa entre folhas e atmosfera em árvores no famoso Arboreto de Ruhande, em Ruanda (o arboreto mais antigo da África). Esta foi minha rotina por 45 dias e, felizmente, terminou com um artigo publicado! Para as árvores mais altas eu tive que improvisar e construir uma plataforma de bambu para fazer as medições. Esta foto ilustra uma das principais razões pelas quais escolhi ser um cientista!
