European Roller
The European roller (Coracias garrulus) is the only member of the roller family to breed in Europe and is found in a wide variety of habitats. Their overall range extends from Central Asia, Middle East, Southern Europe and Sub Saharan Africa. They can reach 32 cm in length and 58 cm of wingspan and have a diet consisting in large insects, small reptiles, rodents and frogs. In presence of a predator, their chicks will vomit a foul-smelling orange liquid onto itself so avoiding predation. This individual was photographed near Xai-Xai, Mozambique.
O Rolieiro Europeu (Coracias garrulus) é o único membro da família dos Coracídeos que se reproduz na Europa, e pode ser encontrado em uma grande variedade de habitats. O seu habitat estende-se desde a Ásia Central, Médio Oriente, Europa do Sul e África Subsaariana. Podem atingir 32 cm de comprimento e 58 cm de envergadura de asas e têm uma dieta composta por grandes insectos, pequenos répteis, roedores e sapos. Na presença de um predador, os seus filhotes vomitam um líquido alaranjado mal cheiroso sobre si mesmos, evitando assim a predação. Este indivíduo foi fotografado perto de Xai-Xai, Moçambique.
