African Spoonbill
The African spoonbill (Platalea alba) is a long-legged wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family. The species is found widespread across the sub-saharan African continent, including Madagascar. They live around marshy wetlands with some open shallow water where they feed, and nests in colonies in trees or reedbeds. In their diet are included various species of fish, molluscs, anphibians, crustaceans, insects and larvae. They use its open bill to "spoon" the animals by swinging it from side-to-side in the water. Long legs and thin, pointed toes enable them to walk easily through varying depths of water. These individuals where photographed flying near their flooded feeding grounds near the village of Hókwè, in Mozambique.
O Colhereiro Africano (Platalea alba) é um pássaro de patas longas da família das ibis e colhereiros. A espécie é encontrada em todo o continente africano ao sul do Deserto do Saara, incluindo Madagáscar. Vivem em torno de zonas alagadiças onde se alimentam, e nidificam em colônias em árvores ou canaviais. Na sua dieta estão incluídos várias espécies de peixes, moluscos, antifibios, crustáceos, insectos e larvas. Eles usam seu bico aberto para "colher" o animais balançando-o de um lado para o outro na água. Suas patas longas e dedos finos e pontiagudos permitem-lhes se deslocar facilmente através de diferentes profundidades de água. Estes indivíduos foram fotografados perto dos seus locais de alimentação perto da vila de Hókwè, em Moçambique.
