Thingvallavatn Lake

Þingvallavatn (a.k.a. Thingvallavatn) is Iceland's largest natural lake, located in the rift valley in southwestern Iceland. The lake lies partially within Þingvellir National Park, one of the many famous places in the country. The cracks and faults around the lake tells much about its volcanic origin. Not coincidently, the lake is located where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. At the northern shore of this lake, the national parliament (the Alþingi), was founded in the year 930, and held its sessions there until 1799. Today, the name Alþingi Íslendinga is still carried by the parliament of Iceland. Beautiful, isn't it?
Þingvallavatn (Thingvallavatn) é o maior lago natural da Islândia e é localizado em uma fenda tectônica a sudoeste do país. O lago fica parcialmente dentro do Parque Nacional de Þingvellir, um dos muitos lugares famosos do país. As rachaduras e falhas ao redor do lago dizem muito sobre sua origem vulcânica. Não coincidentemente, o lago está localizado onde as placas tectônicas euro-asiática e norte-americana se encontram. Na margem norte deste lago, o parlamento nacional (o Alþingi), foi fundado no ano de 930, e realizou suas sessões lá até 1799. Hoje, o nome Alþingi Íslendinga ainda é usado pelo parlamento da Islândia. Lindo, não é?
